  • Tell us about your role. What do you get up to on a typical day/week?

    My role is very varied as the service covers both the acute hospitals (A&E and medical assessment units) and the community. In the hospitals we work towards assisting the prompt discharge of patients to community services within Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.
    Within the community we provide an alternative to hospital admissions by providing health and social care support to patients in their own homes or 24 hour care settings. This entails completing holistic, multisystems assessments to formulate treatment plans and ongoing support to ensure patients can remain safely in the community.

    Some of the advanced care that the service provides includes: venipuncture, ECG recording, IV antibiotics and fluids, catheter provision, bladder scanning, chest physio, mobility aids and O.T. equipment.

    As an Advanced Clinical Practitioner I also provide an on-call service, this provides a clinical support service for all members of the team. It enables them to discuss complex or deteriorating patients and helps them to formulate a treatment plan. I also have a role in capacity management on a daily basis, ensuring that patients are progressed appropriately through the service.

  • What’s the best thing about working in the community? What made you choose this kind of work?

    I have been working in the community now for 12 years, in different parts of the country. I enjoy the relationships that you need to develop with patients, it’s very different being a guest in someone’s home, rather than in a hospital setting.

    The difference a service like Rapid Response can make to a patient’s day to day living is great, you get amazing job satisfaction from this.

    As the work is in people’s own homes, no 2 days or 2 patients are ever the same, you are always having to come up with weird and wonderful ways of problem solving!

  • If you have worked in a previous environment, e.g. acute, how does this compare to working in community health?

    I very much enjoy the dynamic problem solving aspect of the job. We don’t always have appropriate moving and handling equipment to hand or appropriate environments to work in, however due to our experience we are able to problem solve and adapt to the conditions.

  • Describe the working culture here?

    Within Rapid Response there is an amazing multidisciplinary ethos. I have never worked in a team as close-knit as Rapid Response. There is no way we can deliver the high standards of care without always pulling together as one!

  • What do you think makes someone successful here?

    You need to have a lot of self drive, a want to develop and progress. If you have the desire to improve your professional practice there is an abundance of support, both clinical and academic that is available within BCH.

  • Tell us about the learning and development and career progression opportunities?

    Over the past few years I have been privileged to have completed the Physical Assessment and Clinical Reasoning Course, Pathophysiology and Diagnostic Reasoning and the Advanced Clinical Practitioner Development Programme. I have also been given lots of support with clinical supervision and 1:1 session with more senior members of the team. BCH also have a number of management masterclasses that are very beneficial to furthering your career.

    Basically if you have a drive and desire to develop, there are a multitude of options available to you at BCH.

  • What’s the most rewarding thing about your role?

    Being able to put into practice all of the knowledge that I have developed over the numerous years of post graduate work.

  • What do you think patients would say about the service you provide?

    Most patients are very appreciative of the Rapid Response Teams because they have care provided in the comfort of their own homes. They like the extra support they receive during times of ill health and crisis.
