Where you’ll work

HMP Bristol is a men’s only remand prison comprising of up to 614 occupants, with the majority staying for less than 12 months. The facility is based just off of Bristol’s iconic Gloucester Road, and places emphasis on supporting the needs of prisoners.

Amongst these needs are healthcare. Bristol Community Health, in collaboration with other partners in the InspireBetterHealth scheme, help to provide healthcare support through the provision of healthcare clinics, pharmacy and medication, and, specifically for this role, clinics to address substance misuse. This is an exciting opportunity to join us working in a prison environment, where we’re delivering the kind of holistic care that goes beyond health to reduce reoffending and encourage people to make better life choices.

What you’ll do

Joining colleagues and working as part of the multi-disciplinary team delivering InspireBetterHealth’s substance misuse services within the offender healthcare model, you’ll act as one our substance misuse specialists within the team.From point of entry into the prison system to re-entry into the community, you’ll help to ensure patients benefit from healthcare that meets their holistic needs.

Amongst other things, you’ll be helping to:

  • Deliver and manage clinics to meet the needs of patients within HMP Bristol, ensuring they are run smoothly and to the highest clinical standards.
  • Manage, coach, support and supervise healthcare staff within the Substance Misuse Service, to enable team members to work to the best of their ability.
  • Act as an autonomous practitioner in your own right, through assessing patient’s physical, social and psychological needs and planning treatment for them accordingly.
  • Provide specialist advice on substance misuse and related issues, including detoxification, symptomatic management, alcohol withdrawals, and more.

What we’d like from you

You’ll need to be an RMN/RGN degree Registered Nurses with experience at Band 5/6 level. You’ll also bring specific experience of working in clinical substance misuse, of appraisal and clinical supervision, and want to develop your area of special interest. Here, you’ll thrive on the diversity and variety of work on offer, and be eager to step-up to challenge, autonomously and assertively. You’ll also relish the opportunity to improve outcomes by building relationships with the people in your care, enjoying a more rewarding role in the process.

It is not essential that you are currenlty a non medical prescriber, as long as you are committed to undertaking the training course.
